Melodic Contour

Third grade students have become melodic contour experts!  After reviewing high and low pitches kinesthetically and aurally,  we created a representation of phrase one of Snail Snail.

We used our aural skills to identify the high and low pitches and then created a visual representation of Snail Snail.  Finally, we sang the phrase back from our own picture.

In later classes, we were able to practice our knowledge of melodic contour through various means including reading, writing and improvisation.

We improvised our own melodies using high and low sounds and then wrote the improvised motives showing the contour of the melody.  Finally, we were able to sing our improvised melody while tracing the composition.
